Seasoning Cast Iron: What, Why, and How

The Steps for Seasoning Cast Iron

First, pre-heat the oven to 350°F. With warm water, dish soap, and a stiff brush, wash the skillet. This is the only time you will use soap on your cast iron pan.

After cleaning, dry the skillet thoroughly with paper towels or a clean, dry cloth.

The best oil to season cast iron is grapeseed oil. Flaxseed oil is also recommended. If you don’t have access to these oils, canola oil will work perfectly too.

Add the oil to the skillet. Use a paper towel or clean cloth to coat the entire pan. This includes the outside and bottom.

Then, bake the pan for one hour. Put aluminum foil under the rack to catch excess oil drips. After baking, let the pan cool.

You can repeat the process 3 or 4 times to make sure the pan is ready to use. Once seasoned, the cast iron pan will be smooth, shiny, and nonstick.

To you ensure the longevity of your cast iron pan, scrub it with a stiff brush under hot water while the pan is still warm after each use.

Leave the pan on a low-heat burner. The water will evaporate. Then, you can pat the skillet down with a thin layer of oil.
